The Fragrant Garden: Calycanthus

Different varieties of calycanthus are native to various parts of the US. The version common in North Carolina is a small shrub, often called Sweet Shrub. It's unusual bloom is dark red. The bloom's scent is often described as moving from strawberry to ripe apple. Personally, my nose says raspberry, but I'm no expert. I now have a few cuttings from a co-worker's yard that I am trying to root. We'll see how it goes.
